CHS cross country teams both fall to Oliver Ames
By Mike BergerThe Canton High School cross country teams fell to a pair of deep and dominant Oliver Ames teams last week. The boys’ team is now 2-1 while the girls are still looking for their first win of the season.
Most of the Canton runners, however, improved their times on their home course. “It is interesting to see how much we have improved on our course,” boys’ coach Chris Elgar said. “A couple of our top guys just didn’t have it, so we know we can give them a better showing at the Hockomock League Meet.
The boys’ team was beaten 18-45, as the Tigers scored first, second, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth. Only senior Jimmy Paschal was able to break the top five as he finished third at 13:30 on Canton’s 2.5-mile course. Elgar said Paschal’s time was the second fastest for a Canton runner since 2006. Canton’s second runner was Mike Bronstein, who finished ninth overall at 13:54 despite battling some leg pain.
Canton’s next runners were Josh Sheehan, 14th, 14:27; Saeed Vossoughi, 15th, John Whittemore, 18th, 15:06; and Kevin O’Donnell, 19th, 15:11.
Showing the most improvement on the course were freshman Alex Marchand, 19:16, a two-and-a-half-minute improvement; senior John O’Connor, 19:41, an improvement of 2:15; Jake Paschal, 20:03, an upgrade of 2:12; and sophomore Tommy Gutowski, 19:56, an improvement of 2:05.
The Oliver Ames girls took the first five spots and then the seventh through the 13th spots en route to a 15-48 meet win.
Canton’s top runner was Kelsey Sayers, who finished sixth at 17:33. Kate D’Orazio finished 14th at 18:52, tying with Sara Teague in 15th place. Canton’s Eleni Papadopoulos ran 16th at 19 minutes, followed by Kristina Stuopis at 19:07, and Micaela Nannery at 19:10.
Girls’ coach Peter Boucher said that out of 32 Canton runners, 27 improved their home course times. Most notable were runs by Teague and Stuopis, he said.
Canton’s next meet is October 13 against Stoughton at Houghton’s Pond in Milton.
