Bulldogs tie Sharon in overtime
By Mike BergerThe Canton Bulldogs tied the Sharon Eagles in overtime 26-26 Friday night, but not before coming back from a 12-0 deficit to take a 20-12 lead at the end of the third quarter.
As CHS head coach Jim Goff noted, while the offense had a very good day both on the ground and in the air, the team “left some opportunities out there and [the] defense was not as sharp as in past weeks.”
“This one is a tough one to lose,” Goff said. “The kids are treating it as a loss.”
Tied 20-20 after the end of four quarters, each team was allowed one opportunity to score from 10 yards out. Both teams succeeded in scoring a touchdown, but neither could covert the extra point to win the game.
On offense, the Bulldogs made several big plays, including two long runs by Anthony LaRose and two big pass plays from quarterback Ryan Conrad to wide receiver Elias Camacho. LaRose finished with 130 yards rushing while Camacho had over 100 yards receiving. Defensively, Brandyn Sparks played very well at defensive tackle and Camacho played well at safety.
LaRose set up the first Canton score with a very impressive 65-yard run that came up just short of the end zone. Seconds later he scored from less than a yard out to cut the deficit to 12-6 before halftime. In the third quarter, the Canton passing game got going as Conrad connected with Camacho on a 58-yard touchdown pass, and later Conrad scored on a quarterback keeper after a 40-yard toss to Camacho. LaRose scored on a short run in overtime for the final score.
“The defense was okay at times, but we left Sharon off the hook,” Goff said. “Sharon did play well, but we didn’t tackle well either. We let Sharon hang around and they capitalized on the opportunities.”
Canton will next play North Attleboro at 7 p.m. this Friday night, October 22, at Community Field in North Attleboro Center.
