CHS girls’ soccer finishes week 1-1-1
By Jeffrey CattelThe Canton High girls’ soccer team finished the week with a mixed bag: a 5-2 win over King Philip, a 1-1 tie against Mansfield, and a 4-2 loss to Oliver Ames. At the halfway point in the season, the girls’ record stands at 4-3-2.
Coach Paul Turner described the game against KP as one of the girls’ best performances of the season.
“KP is a physical, scrappy, athletic team, but we were able to outplay them,” he said.
King Philip came out strong at the beginning, scoring the first goal of the game. The Bulldogs bounced back, quickly scoring two goals — one each by sophomores Meghan Lennon and Lauren Berman — in the next three minutes of game play. The Bulldogs remained ahead 2-1 at the half.
KP managed to tie up the game at the beginning of the second half, but again Canton pulled ahead with three additional goals: one each from Lennon, freshman Kim McNally, and sophomore Brianna Duserick.
The girls quickly commanded the lead in the game against Mansfield off a Berman goal. Fifteen minutes into the second half, however, they gave up a goal to bring the game to an even 1-1.
“The girls worked really hard in the second half, but we missed some key chances throughout the game, which resulted in the tie,” Turner said.
The Bulldogs came out similarly strong in the game against Oliver Ames. Berman and junior Kensey Waterman scored quickly, but the girls were soon met with resistance and quickly gave up two goals to tie up the game. In the second half, Canton failed to control the ball, allowing OA to score two additional goals and command the lead for the remainder of the game.
After starting the week with a decisive victory, the girls were understandably disappointed with how the week finished.
Turner said he’s happy with how the girls have fared in the first half of the season.
“We’re outworking most teams we play against,” he said. “We’re creating a lot of scoring opportunities, but we’d like more of those opportunities to translate to goals.”
