CHS cross country teams split meet

By

Even without its top runner — Jimmy Paschal, who was recovering from a minor leg injury and a cold — the CHS boys’ cross country team improved its season record to 3-1 with a win over Stoughton last week, while the girls’ team dropped a 17-41 decision to the Black Knights.

The Canton boys ran second, third, sixth, seventh, and eighth to win 26-33 over the Black Knights at Stoughton’s home course. CHS head coach Chris Elgar said several Bulldog runners stepped up in Paschal’s absence, led by senior captain Josh Sheehan, who finished the 3.1-mile course in 17:55 for second place.

Elgar said senior Saeed Vossoughi ran his best race of the season with a third place finish at 18:03. Junior John Whittemore finished sixth at 18:45, followed by senior Mike Bronstein, seventh, 18:54 (despite not feeling 100 percent), and junior Kevin O’Donnell, who finished eighth at 19:10. Both Whittemore and O’Donnell ran their personal best races to date.

Canton captured the sixth through the 14th spots with senior Chad Cohen running ninth, 14:57; junior Sean Akey, 10th, 20:05; junior Dave Rosenberg, 11th, 20:09; sophomore  Joe Sabatino, 12th, 20:11; senior Rob Bronstein, 13th, 20:14; and senior captain Chris Haidul, 14th, 20:14. Also showing improvement was junior Ethan Eastwood, who finished at 20:32 before Stoughton’s fifth varsity runner.

Both CHS teams will be participating in the Hockomock League Meet on Saturday, October 30, at Borderland State Park.

“I truly believe we can earn third overall, but knowing just how competitive the Hocks are, a good effort could also generate a fifth- or sixth-place performance,” Elgar said.

The girls’ team is still searching for its first win but continues to improve, according to coach Peter Boucher.

“Stoughton is a really good team,” he said. “We battled really hard, and I was very pleased with our team’s effort. The Lady Bulldogs really emptied the tanks on this one.”

Canton’s top runner was Kate D’Orazio, who finished fourth overall at 23:22. She was followed by Kelsey Sayers, seventh, 23:30; Micaela Nannery, eighth, 23:41; Mairead Bagley, 10th, 24:04; Kristina Stuopis, 12th, 24:11; Courtney Loughlane, 13th, 24:18; and Eleni Popadopoulis, 14th, 24:24.
