CHS field hockey team nets 2 more shutouts

The Canton High field hockey team continued its undefeated streak this week with two shutouts: 6-0 over Stoughton and 4-0 against Attleboro. To date, the girls have only been scored upon twice and have racked up eight shutouts this season.

In the game against Stoughton, the Bulldogs played intensely from the start of the game.

“Recently we’ve been getting beat to the ball,” coach Fior Griffin said. “Against Stoughton we went out hard, beat the other girls to the ball and started to get back into our passing game.”

Even with this increased intensity, Canton didn’t get on the scoreboard until senior captain Emily Dillon scored in the 22nd minute of play. Other goal scorers included junior Haley Gaughan and sophomore Meaghan McKenna with two goals each, and senior Cady Kelly with one goal.

Despite the girls’ strong performance, Griffin said the team still needs to better capitalize on goal scoring opportunities.

“We had 30 shots on goal and ten offensive corners,” Griffin said. “In the tournament we’re not going to get that many opportunities.”

Later in the week, the girls seemed tentative at the start of the game against Attleboro, a team Griffin said they haven’t faced since she became coach four years ago.

“In the first ten minutes they seemed really caught off guard, especially with Attleboro’s strong passes,” Griffin said. “We took a time out, addressed the issue, and then the momentum of the game changed.”

As was the case in the game against Stoughton, Dillon scored the team’s first goal, assisted by freshman Kellie Stigas, 24 minutes into the first half. Two minutes into the second half Stigas netted her first goal of the season. McKenna and Gaughan followed quickly with one goal each. Senior captain Ali King assisted on both goals.
