CHS boys’ soccer brings home Davenport title

By

After winning one Hockomock League championship (1997) in the first 22 years of its existence (1984-2005), the Canton High boys’ soccer team wrapped up its fourth league title since 2006 with a 3-0 win at Sharon last Tuesday.

It was the third straight Hockomock title for the Bulldogs, but after the league split into two divisions prior to this season, this marks the team’s first-ever Davenport Division Championship. Canton also earned a 1-1 tie against North Attleboro last Friday in the team’s only other action last week.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, the  team is still undefeated through 14 games this year, with an 11-0-3 record. Dating back to last season, Canton is riding a 27-game regular-season unbeaten streak, with its last loss coming September 21, 2009.

Against Sharon, Scott Levy got the scoring started for the Bulldogs midway through the first half, providing what proved to be the Hockomock championship-clinching goal. Just minutes before the half, Igor Perun gave Canton a 2-0 lead.

Early in the second half, Ramon Ambrosio scored the final goal for the Bulldogs. Chris Murray earned the assist, the 22nd of his career, which eclipsed Bill Anastasiadis’ (’04) program record. Colby Gavigan, aided by his backfield, earned his ninth shutout of the season and the 20th of his career, leaving him one shy of Devin O’Gorman’s (’09) program record.

Against North Attleboro, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead into the half, scoring off a Chris Murray throw-in. But North Attleboro battled back, tying the game 1-1 midway through the second half. It was only the second time an opponent has scored on Canton’s home field the entire season. Neither team was able to score the decisive goal.

Canton concludes the regular season this week. The team was scheduled to travel to Foxboro on Monday and host Franklin on Wednesday. Saturday marks the first Hockomock crossover game. Canton played each of its Davenport Division rivals twice this season and played each of the Kelly-Rex teams once. The crossover game will match Davenport Division champ Canton against the Kelly-Rex champ.
