CHS girls’ soccer qualifies for tournament
By Jeffrey CattelWith two more wins last week bringing its record to 9-3-2, the Canton High girls’ soccer team qualified for the MIAA tournament.
The Bulldogs dominated in a 4-0 win over Sharon — a team Canton had tied earlier in the season in what coach Paul Turner described as “a bit of a hiccup.”
Turner said last week’s game against the Eagles was their best performance of the season. Junior Kensey Waterman scored two goals. Other scorers included sophomore Brianna Duserick and junior Megan Barrera with one goal apiece.
The girls had a similarly strong performance in a 5-1 win against North Attleboro. Still, the game was closer than the score suggested, Turner said. The game remained scoreless 30 minutes into the first half before Duserick scored to give the Bulldogs the lead. With 50 seconds left in the first half, junior Lauren Berman scored her first goal of the game. North Attleboro came back with one goal early in the second half, but Berman squashed any of NA’s hopes with three additional goals. Berman has racked up 22 goals on the season and is currently leading the Hock’s small school division.
Other strong players last week included freshman Kim McNally and sophomore Meghan Lennon. Turner said McNally, a midfielder, played outstanding, and he noted Lennon’s strong performance throughout the second half of the season. Senior goalkeeper Erin Russell has also been solid in the second half of the season.
“After a tough start at the beginning of the season, she’s only given up two goals in the last five games,” Turner said. “She’s defending really well in goal.”
