The Hannington’s Over-65 Senior Softball Team recently returned with a gold medal from the Huntsman World Senior Softball Tournament held in St. George, Utah. Playing under the name of the Hannington Club of Massachusetts, sponsored by Canton Attorney Glen Hannington and managed by Canton resident and Canton Citizen columnist Joe DeFelice, the team won six straight games and finished the tournament with an amazing .692 batting average.
Playing teams from California, Oregon, Michigan, and Calgary, Alberta, and Mississauga, Canada, the Hannington Club averaged 15 runs per game while holding teams to eight runs per game.
“You have to have exceptional and talented players to win national softball championships, and the Hannington team had three of what they call ‘super major’ players,” DeFelice said. “And they went a combined 42 for 47, an outstanding .894 batting average. Having players of that caliber put this team over the top.”
This was the third straight tournament won by the Over-65 Hannington softball team. Previously, the team won the New England Regional Tournament in Branford, Connecticut, and the Cape Cod Classic Tournament in Harwich.
