Visiting Hornets overpower Bulldogs 41-0
By Mike BergerMansfield’s football team proved why it’s rated one of the best in eastern Massachusetts as the visiting Hornets rolled to a 41-0 win over the Canton Bulldogs Friday night.
Mansfield climbed to 9-1 while Canton is still looking for its first win after falling to 0-9-1. The victory clinched the league title for Mansfield, which will now play Walpole in the playoffs on November 30.
The Hornets scored on their first six possessions and raced to a 28-0 first-quarter lead.
The Bulldogs responded with much better tackling and more physical play in the second half, advancing to the Hornet 23-yard line late in the game.
DaQuan Pendarvis (6-2, 260 pounds) — taking over for Anthony LaRose, who was injured in the game — was the leading ground gainer for the Bulldogs. Josh Matt came in and played well at quarterback, directing two drives well into Mansfield territory. Senior lineman Mike Mitton also played well with a quarterback sack and several tackles.
Elias Camacho also sustained an injury Friday night, and starting quarterback Ryan Conrad is still out after injuring his leg in the Oliver Ames game.
Prior to the start of Friday night’s contest, Canton’s senior players and cheerleaders were honored.
Senior cheerleaders include Kyla Galer, Danielle MacKenzie, Daniella Menconi, Andrea Freedman, Katerina Grady, Alyssa Crane and Siena Terenzio.
Senior football players include Chris Boughter, Alex Chery, Ryan Conrad, Tim Cruise, Jerry Gibbs, Bryan Glick, Anthony LaRose, David Mansfield, Matt McLaughlin, Mike Mitton, Wesley Mok, Matt Nichols, DaQuan Pendarvis, Jon Vaughn and George Zanetas.
Canton’s next game is Thanksgiving morning at Stoughton High School against the Black Knights.
