Girls’ hockey team wins first game

The Canton High girls’ hockey team started off the season strong with a 6-2 win over North Quincy last week.

Despite the high-scoring game, coach Kelly Rider said the girls didn’t play their best game.

“It’s the beginning of the season and we still have a lot to improve, but we’re moving in the right direction,” she said.

The girls started off slow in the first period with only one goal. Rider said they started to show momentum halfway through the second period when they scored three goals within three minutes. The Bulldogs held North Quincy to a shutout through the second period, but let up two goals in the third period. Senior goalie Sarah Healey had 18 saves on the game.

Freshman Casey Considine led the team with two goals. Juniors Stephanie Rizzitano and Haley Gaughan, sophomore Meghan Lennon, and freshman Katie Kelleher each netted one goal.

After losing in the second round of the state tournament last year, Rider said the girls are hungry to go deeper into the tournament this year.

“We have high expectations, but I think they’re realistic,” Rider said.
