The Canton Board of Selectmen and Fire Chief Charles Doody have commended paramedics Lyle Chandler and James Meier and EMTs Wayne MacDonald and Charles Sudhalter for their efforts in reviving a young man who went into cardiac arrest on a train pulling into the Canton Center station. The selectmen and Chief Doody also commended paramedicsChris Hiltz and Nicolas Pino and EMT Thomas Brown, who treated another cardiac arrest patient who was taken to Norwood Hospital. Canton police officers Mike Lank and Rob Quirk also received commendations from the board for their efforts in two recent arrests, and as Canton Police Chief Berkowitz said, “for their service to the community and their professionalism.”
Canton police are now enforcing the town’s winter parking bylaws, which prohibit on-street parking longer than one hour between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., other than if acting in an emergency.
Lombardo’s restaurant in Randolph again gave about 700 south shore seniors an early Christmas present with its 38thannual Thanksgiving Day turkey dinner. About 103 volunteers graciously served 480 pounds of turkey, 250 pounds of potatoes, 100 pounds of stuffing, and 500 pounds of squash. They also served 20 gallons of gravy, 150 pies, and 64 gallons of apple cider. Needless to say, the seniors, who were otherwise alone for the holiday, were very appreciative of the Lombardo family’s generosity.
Speaking of turkeys, wild turkeys have made a strong comeback in Massachusetts. The Division of Fisheries and Wildlife estimates there are now 25,000 of them in the state, which is remarkable because wild turkeys had been extinct in Massachusetts for decades. However, in 1970, 37 of the birds were imported from New York and released in the Berkshires. The population then grew slowly, reaching 1,000 by 1978. Incidentally, wild turkeys are fully protected by Massachusetts law, except for two hunting seasons, which run from April 26 to May 22 and October 22 to October 30. This year, 2,860 turkeys were hunted and killed. Wild turkeys can now be seen in many Boston suburbs – including Canton – traveling in groups or “rafters,” which are most active in the early morning and at dusk. MAC can attest to this as 12 wild turkeys recently congregated in his back yard at the end of Edward Street.
MAC was saddened to see that two longtime Canton residents recently passed. Retired Canton police officer Charlie McGrath died in Florida at age 78, and World War II vet Errol M. Lane, who was active in American Legion Affairs, died at 88.
Congratulations to the Blue Hills Regional Vo-Tech Warrior football team for winning the Mayflower League (Large) Championship with a 10-1 record and for playing in the Division 4 Super Bowl at Curry College on December 4 against a strong team from Shawsheen. With less than five minutes to play in the game, the score was tied 6-6, but Shawsheen scored 14 points in less than a minute to win. A 25-yard touchdown run and a 35-yard interception return for another touchdown led to a 20-6 victory over the Blue Hill Warriors.
On a side note, Vincent Burton, the Warriors’ outstanding running back, finished the season scoring an amazing 30 touchdowns and 22 points after touchdowns for 202 total points, and he is only a sophomore. Opening holes for Burton’s touchdown runs was the Blue Hills offensive line, which was anchored by senior center Rich Connor of Canton.
The Canton Historical Society will have another open house at 1400 Washington Street on Sunday, December 19, between 2 and 5 p.m. If you have never been there, stop in to see numerous items regarding Canton history.
Finally, the warrant for non-zoning articles for the upcoming annual town meeting scheduled for April 25, 2011, opened on December 16 and will close on Monday, January 3, at 12 noon. The zoning warrant closed on December 10.
We must always go the second mile. When we go the first mile, we simply do what is required of us. It is when we go the second mile that excellence is achieved and minor miracles happen.
This is all for now folks; see you next week.
