Boys’ hockey team ties Quincy in season opener
By Jay TurnerThe Canton High School boys’ varsity ice hockey team opened its season on the road with a 3-3 tie against nonleague Quincy last Wednesday, but it was hardly a feel-good experience as the Bulldogs twice gave up a two-goal lead while committing far too many careless penalties.
At one point early in the third period — after JC Marcone had scored to make it 3-1 — Canton appeared to be in complete control until a succession of Bulldog penalties gave Quincy the man advantage, which the Presidents then turned into a pair of power play goals. Canton would later have a chance to regain the lead, but ended up having to settle for the draw.
The Bulldogs’ first two goals were scored by Matt Malloy, with an assist from Justin Rudy, and Mike Denehy, with an assist from Steve Mullaney.
Canton also got a solid performance from sophomore goaltender Rich Nee, who made his mark early on by turning away a quality Quincy shot that had been set up by a turnover off the opening faceoff. After the game, head coach Brian Shuman blamed himself for not preparing his team well enough in the preseason, but he also faulted the players for showing no sense of urgency and not enough “grit and toughness.” Then again, he was very much expecting to see an improvement in both of those areas when the team returned to action this week, beginning with Blue Hills on Tuesday, followed by either Westwood or Norwood a day later.
