Boys’ hoop team beats Foxboro for season’s first win

By

With a career high of 20 points — including three three-pointers — from Chris Murray and 11 points and 11 rebounds from Josh Sheehan, the Canton High boys’ basketball team grabbed its first win of the season 41-35 at Foxboro on December 21.

The 1-1 Bulldogs led at all points of the game, including 12-6 at the end of the first quarter, 20-12 at the half, and 28-18 going into the fourth quarter.

CHS head coach Mike Devoll said the defense was consistent throughout the game while the offense made some good adjustments to a zone defense that had bothered Canton in its loss to Sharon in the season opener.

“We moved the ball much better than we did against Sharon, and [Murray] hitting those shots really helped our offense,” Devoll said.

He added that Murray’s shooting will continue to help as the Bulldogs have been playing without their best shooter, Joe McCabe, who is expected to return this week from an ankle injury.

Foxboro managed to cut the lead to five in the fourth quarter, but Murray and Sheehan hit some key baskets down the stretch to help Canton protect the lead.

Devoll praised the defensive work of substitute Alex Chery as well as starters Colby Gavigan, Scott Levy, and Wade Ransome.

Canton was due to play Old Rochester on Tuesday and will face Southeastern Vo-Tech on January 4 at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs will then host Mansfield on Friday, January 7, followed by a special Sunday matchup with Fairhaven at CHS at noon.
