Young CHS girls’ hoop team starts season 3-0

The Canton girls’ basketball team remains undefeated this season after beating Foxboro 59-53 last Tuesday night at CHS.

The Bulldogs rallied to outscore the Warriors 21-14 in the fourth quarter to win their third straight game.

In the win, junior power forward Olivia Murphy had another impact performance, scoring 26 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. She has been the leading scorer and has collected a double-double in each of the Bulldogs’ three wins this season.

The Bulldogs have been ferocious out of the gate despite having one of the league’s youngest rosters. Of their 10 varsity players, only three are seniors and seven will be returning next season. The Bulldogs also have several new faces this year, including sophomore power forward Kristen Burns, who played on the freshman team last season and has improved tremendously.

“She worked very hard [in the] offseason to improve her skills, and that is showing,” head coach Kaitlin Mills said of Burns. “She has tremendous potential and will definitely help us this season.”

Kyshani Dummott is another new face and Coach Mills credits her as a quick defender at the point guard position. Caitlyn Hathaway, the youngest player on the team, is the only freshman.

“[Hathaway] has some fundamentally sound offensive skills,” Mills said. “She has a very bright future ahead of her.”

Mills recognized a special moment in the preseason when the young team stepped up to defeat Norwood in a scrimmage. With three minutes left in the game, Canton was clinging to a two-point lead, but Mills left only two returning varsity players on the court alongside three new players to see how they would perform under pressure.

“With only minutes remaining they remained calm, played great defense, made some huge rebounds, and scored some big baskets to keep the lead and win the game,” Mills said. “Meanwhile, the bench was cheering and supporting their teammates – it was a very proud moment and also one of great potential. I am excited to be coaching such a hardworking, enthusiastic group of young ladies.”

With the holiday week, the Bulldogs had eight days in between games and were scheduled to play on December 29 against Abington and on December 30 in the Scituate Holiday Tournament.
