Gymnasts fall to Sharon despite solid effort by Brooks
By Kelsey OatesLast Monday, the CHS gymnastics team fell to Sharon, 130.15 to 98.7. The Bulldogs are doing well, though, as they face a rebuilding season and a disadvantage in equipment. Canton is the only gymnastics team in the league that does not have gymnasts participating in outside programs, so opponents are able to create routines and practice at private facilities. The Bulldogs practice and hold home meets at their gym in the old A building, which has an inferior floor.
The bars and the beam have proven to be more difficult for the Bulldogs, a result coach Carla King attributes to her team’s relative inexperience with the events. The youthfulness of the team, however, also translates into great potential. To score high, a gymnast must design an intricate routine. The more complex the routine is, the higher the start value will be, which will lead to a higher final score. As the Bulldogs grow comfortable, they will be able to tackle more complex routines and post higher scores.
King praised her gymnasts’ willingness to perform new routines in unfamiliar areas and the workmanship they have shown in the quest to improve their scores.
King singled out Jessie Brooks, Canton’s top scorer against Sharon. Brooks received a 7.8 on floor and a 7.5 on vault. King praised Brooks as “one of the hardest workers in the gym.” Just a sophomore, Brooks is competing in all four events for the first time and is already improving in her routines. Siena Terenzio, another high scorer, was also lauded for adding the floor to her events.
The Bulldogs’ best events at the meet were the floor and the vault. Along with Brooks, Terenzio, Liz Mason, and Rachel Lebovitz competed in floor, earning scores of 7.2, 7.0, and 6.9, respectively. On the vault, Mason (7.4), Lizzy Doherty (7.4), and Terenzio (7.1) were right on the heels of Brooks.
With the team’s top scorer, Becca Pulcini, returning to competition, King and the Bulldogs look forward to their upcoming meet.
