Man About Canton: So Long 2010
By Joe DeFeliceDID YOU KNOW…
The year 2010 is finally coming to an end, and we will soon be entering the new year of 2011, and MAC hopes it will be a good year for all of you.
As we close out the year, MAC sends out congratulations to the Boy Scouts who are celebrating their 100th birthday. Scouting is a great program for kids and teaches them many skills they can use for the rest of their lives.
Canton-based Reebok has announced that it will team up with MC10, Inc., in Cambridge to create “a new class” of sports apparel and equipment featuring wearable electronics. Speaking of Reebok, it was reported that former Reebok CEO Paul Fireman plans to reassume ownership of the Willobend Country Club in Mashpee, which he originally purchased in 2007. Among other things, Fireman also owns the Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey.
The Boston Herald reports that famed Boston waterfront restaurant Anthony’s Pier Four is at the top of Boston’s tax delinquent list, owing $423,857 in back taxes. The popular restaurant was opened at 140 Northern Avenue in 1963 by Anthony Athanas, who died in 2005.
The Herald also reported that 118 Boston nail salons were recently inspected, and the state inspectors found that nearly half of them had health and safety violations, which resulted in fines amounting to over $8,000. The reuse of single-use tools such as emery boards, buffers and other products accounted for 31 of the 97 violations found. Seventeen salons offered services outside the scope of their state licenses. They also found 31 salons were improperly supervising employees. Inspectors found eight salons to be unsanitary, while six salons were caught using credo blades to illegally remove calluses, and two had poor ventilation. So if you frequent a nail salon, pay attention to how it operates.
Now that the year is coming to an end, it soon will be time to file your 2010 income tax returns; and the Associated Press says the Internal Revenue Service is going to increase the number of returns it will audit by nearly 11 percent. The statistics recently released show that wealthy taxpayers were most likely to be targeted.
Just a thought: Why doesn’t the Canton High football team play the Blue Hills Regional football team? It would be a great match-up.
A recent Department of Public Health report said the life expectancy age for Massachusetts residents rose to 80.4 years in 2008, which is an all-time high. According to the report, a girl born in Massachusetts can expect to live to age 83, and a boy can expect to live to be 78.
Some information we don’t want to hear: According to Attorney General Martha Coakley, less than 50 percent ofcharitable donations made in Massachusetts in 2009 actually stayed with the charity, while the rest of the money, totaling millions of dollars, went to cover expenses and fees of professional solicitors. If you wish to donate to a charity, you should try to determine where the donation is going, what it will be used for, and how much it will ultimately benefit the charity. On a side note, the Canton Lions Club returns 100 percent of its donations back to the town.
The Board of Selectmen has appointed Douglas Fitzgerald Connor to the position of firefighter/paramedic to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of firefighter Paul Close.
With the end of 2010, we find that gasoline prices are now averaging over $3 per gallon. Let’s hope these increases stop soon.
Finally, many of you will be celebrating New Year’s Eve tomorrow evening in one form or another. If you plan to have a few drinks to celebrate the arrival of 2011, MAC suggests you make arrangements to have a designated driver take you home. Meanwhile, many of you will be watching the ball come down at New York’s Times Square and watching the festivities on TV. MAC still misses the tradition of the New Year’s Eve music of the late Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadian Orchestra.
Now and then, it is good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.
MAC wishes everyone a Happy New Year!
This is all for now folks; see you next week.
