Both track teams beat Foxboro, excel at Boston Holiday Meet
By Mike BergerIt was a successful holiday vacation week for Canton High School’s indoor track teams, as the girls edged Foxboro for their first victory, and the boys continued their unbeaten season with their own win over the Warriors. Both teams also had many strong individual performances at the Boston Holiday Meet.
In the December 29 meet against Foxboro, the girls edged Foxboro 44-42, with first-place finishers including Anna Amico, 55-meter dash; Mellyn Costello, hurdles; Radiya Buchanan, high jump; and Chidimma Nwankwo, shot put.
The 4×400 relay team of Lexie MacQuarrie, Zoe Rosenberg, Mairead Bagley, and Kate D’Orazio also won to seal the victory. Vicky Tondre placed second in the 55-meter dash; Lukesha Jospesh had an important personal best in the shot put; D’Orazio placed third in the 600; Rosenberg placed second in the 1,000; and Bagley placed third in the mile. Stephanie Mui placed second in the high jump with a personal best of four feet, eight inches; and MacQuarrie, a freshman, placed third in the 300.
“With only a few dual meets left and with our sights set on Hocks, we are still staying very focused on what the main objective of the season is,” head coach Ben Mattson said. “For some of the girls, it will be to [achieve personal bests] in their last dual meet; for the others, it will be competing in the Hocks or State Meet. We have done very well so far, but there is still a lot to get done.”
Mattson noted that his team also had a great showing at the Boston Holiday Meet, with three girls qualifying for the Class Meet: Amico, Nwankwo and Buchanan. Amico placed fifth in the 55-meter dash — Tondre placed eighth in the event; Nwankwo placed fourth in the shot put, and Buchanan qualified in the high jump.
Boys’ team
It was another nail-biter that came down to the relay, and fortunately it worked in Canton’s favor as the Bulldogs defeated the Warriors 47-39 (1-0-1 on the season). The team tied Stoughton 43-43 before the holiday break.
At Tuesday’s Boston Holiday Meet, which had strong qualifying standards, Canton had four members compete and they all did well. Matt Sidney was the highest placement for the Bulldogs with a second-best career jump of six feet, seven inches, good enough for second place. Jon Vaughn also scored in the top six in the 55-meter hurdles with an 8.10 time. Just missing placing was Cam Huber in the 600 with a seventh-place finish and a great time of 1:26.51. Tom Kerikas ran a personal-best 300-meter time of 40.39. All four, according to head coach Chris Elgar, were key to Canton’s win on Wednesday against Foxboro.
Scoring first places in the Foxboro meet were: Vaughn, 50-yard hurdles, 6.8 seconds, 50-yard dash, 5.6 seconds; Mike Bronstein, mile, 5:07.6; Huber, 600-meter run, 1:36.7; Vlad Leopard, 1,000, 3:01.9.
Earning second place spots were: Jake Fruci, 1,000-meter run, 3:02.2; Joe Beaudet, shot put, 30 feet, five inches; Kerikas, 300 meters, 41.6 seconds.
Recording third place spots were: Kerikas, 50-yard hurdles, 7.2 seconds; Chris Haidul, 600-meter run, 1:43; Saeed Vossoughi, two mile, 11:37.1.
Five seniors are dominating the team’s scoring: Sidney is far ahead with 21.5 points, followed by Huber, 12.5; Vaughn, 11; Bronstein, 10; and Kerikas with nine points.
Both teams are now preparing for meets with Sharon on Saturday, January 8, at 12:30 p.m. at the Franklin Field House, and with Oliver Ames on Wednesday, January 12, at 5 p.m.
