Girls’ hockey team falls to Duxbury
By Jeffrey CattelThe Canton High girls’ hockey team fell to Duxbury with a difficult 5-1 loss, to bring the girls’ record on the season to an even 2-2.
Coach Kelly Rider said both teams played evenly throughout the first two periods, but Duxbury finished the second period ahead 1-0.
It was in the third period, however, that Duxbury really broke away. The Dragons netted four goals while freshman Julia Murphy scored the Bulldogs lone goal.
“Duxbury just had more energy and controlled most of the period,” Rider said. “We were out-shot 14-4 in the third.”
Although the loss is disappointing for the team, Rider said it provided a good learning experience for the team.
“The girls realized that Duxbury is definitely talented, but also that we are talented and can be competitive with them and other top teams,” Rider said.
The Duxbury game exemplified the Bulldogs’ need to be more aggressive on offense and have more of a presence in front of the opposing team’s net.
“Experience is a hard way of learning sometimes,” Rider said, “but I think we’ll take it with us and it will make us a better team for 2011.”
Results of Wednesday’s game against Dover-Sherborn will appear in next week’s Citizen.
