MAC: Canton Athletes Making Us Proud

With the start of a new year, it is time for MAC to report about some of our outstanding Canton athletes who are doing well in their individual sports.
Congratulations to Canton High seniors Emily Dillon and Alli Guenthner for being named to the Boston Herald All Scholastic Women’s Field Hockey Team and teammates Michelle McNeil and Nikki Wanless for being named Hockomock All Stars. Their team had an outstanding season. Additionally, Emily Dillon, the Hockomock League MVP, was also named to the Boston Globe All Scholastic Team.
CHS senior and soccer team forward Ramon Ambrosio was named to the Boston Herald All Scholastic boys’ soccer team as well as winning All Hockomock League, All E-Mass, and All State Honors by scoring 17 goals and 5 assists.
MAC also congratulates Nicole Johnson, a junior at the Rivers School, who was awarded Independent School League All League Honors and All State Honors for soccer.
Congratulations also go out to Vincent Burton, the outstanding sophomore fullback on the Division 4 Blue Hills Regional Warrior football team who was named to the Boston Globe’s All Scholastic Team. Burton is an honor roll student who led Division 4 with 30 touchdowns and 202 points while rushing for 1,549 yards on 279 carries. Burton was also named the Division 4 Player of the Year.
While we are handing out kudos, congratulations to Canton High Athletic Director Danny Erickson, who was named by the Boston Globe as the Division 2 Coach of the Year for leading his soccer team to the Division 2 South Sectional Championship and for winning the Hockomock League Title in the Davenport Division.
Bridgewater State University senior defender Mike White from Canton has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division 3 All New England East Region Second Team, and he was also named to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer All Conference First Team.
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Women’s Basketball Team has two outstanding Canton girls on the team: freshman forward Erika Bornemann and sophomore forward Colleen Moriarty.
The Associated Press recently reported that for the fourth year in a row, Vermont has been ranked as the healthiest state in the union by the 2010 American’s Health Rankings. Massachusetts was ranked second followed by New Hampshire. Mississippi was rated as the least healthy state.
Another interesting statistic tells us that Canton is apparently becoming a more diverse community as evidenced by the fact that 19 percent of the Canton High student body is now made up of minorities.
Fred Kobs has been elected to be the new post adjutant of the Beatty Post 24 American Legion, replacing Bob Brownwho had to step down after 46 years due to illness.
The Board of Selectman has appointed Kerry Ann Callahan Mofford to the Canton Youth Commission.
The Canton Fire Department has been awarded a $5,415 Student Awareness Fire Education (SAFE) grant for fiscal year 2011 by the State Department of Fire Services. The program is designed to teach children about what they can do to prevent fires, to survive those that occur, and how to respond correctly to fires and other emergencies.
The 1,000-pound pedestal that formerly held the town’s Civil War soldier statue has returned to its position in front of the Town Hall after undergoing a year-long rehabilitation. A small Christmas tree sits upon the pedestal today.
Tom MacDonald, Canton’s master fine furniture maker, is featured on the cover of Woodworking Magazine’s upcoming February 2011 issue and in a feature article about an early-American oak blanket chest (circa 1600s). You should also look for the PBS broadcast showing the construction of this piece of furniture at 4:30 p.m. on an upcoming Saturday afternoon. The program will also show Al D’Attanasio, who helps MacDonald out in his woodworking shop.
Norwood Hospital will open its $6.8 million, 7,675-square-foot, state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory this month, and the public is invited to tour the facility on January 9 from noon to 2 p.m.
Finally, the Canton Recreation Commission is offering ice skating lessons at the Metropolis Skating Rink beginning on Tuesday, January 19. There is a $90 fee for the ten-week program, which will be held on Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:20 p.m. or from 5:20 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. You can register at the Recreation Department office at 92 Pleasant Street.
The Recreation Department will also conduct skiing or snow-boarding lessons at the Blue Hill Ski Area on Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 noon beginning on Sunday, January 9. The fee for a five-lesson program is $225 if you need equipment or $150 if you have your own equipment. The five sessions include a one-and-a-half-hour lesson and one and a half hours of free skiing. It is important to live in the “is” and not in the “was.”
