Girls’ hockey dominates in two impressive wins
By Jeffrey CattelAfter a tough loss last week, the CHS girls’ hockey team rebounded with two impressive wins: 8-1 over Dover-Sherborn and 9-0 against Boston Latin Academy.
“After the Duxbury game last week, it became really evident that we needed to get more players to the net,” coach Kelly Rider said.
The girls succeeded in adding pressure on offense to create numerous goal-scoring situations. The team out-shot Dover-Sherborn 52-4 and Boston Latin Academy 41-14.
And it wasn’t just a few select players who pressured the opposing teams’ goalies; it was a true team effort, with six players netting goals in each game.
Against Dover-Sherborn, the girls came out strong from the start and scored five goals in the first period. The girls let up a single goal in the second period, but added three more goals to what proved to be an insurmountable lead.
Goal scorers included sophomore Meaghan McKenna and junior Stephanie Rizzitano, who scored two goals each. Juniors Michelle McNeil and Haley Gaughan, sophomore Meghan Lennon, and freshman Elise Barry netted one goal.
The girls had a similarly strong performance against Boston Latin Academy. Senior goalie Sarah Healey earned her second shutout of the season.
“Most of our goals came from the same reason — getting people to pressure at the net,” Rider said. “Often we wouldn’t score off the first shot, but we’d have plenty of players on offense there to tip the puck in.”
McKenna finished the game with a hat trick, while Gaughan and freshman Katie Kelleher netted two goals a piece. Additional scorers included Lennon and seniors Molly Phalan and Nikki Wanless with one goal each.
More impressive than the high number of goals, 12 of the team’s 15 players finished the game with at least one point. Points are earned in ice hockey by netting a goal or performing an assist.
Results of Wednesday’s game against King Philip will appear in next week’s Citizen.
