Bernard S. Redmont honored by French government
By Canton CitizenCanton resident Bernard S. Redmont has been honored with the prestigious award of “Officier” of the French Legion of Honor.
A decree by the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, named Redmont to the distinction.
“This award testifies to the president of the French Republic’s high esteem for your merits and accomplishments,” France’s ambassador in Washington, Pierre Vimont, said. “In particular, it is a sign of France’s appreciation for your special contribution to the defense of French language. It is also a token of great esteem for your dedication to the friendship between our two nations.”
Redmont is Dean Emeritus of Boston University College of Communication and a former foreign correspondent for CBS News and other media in 55 countries, including France, where he lived with his wife, Joan, for 28 years.
They now reside at Orchard Cove, a continuing care retirement community in Canton. They have two children, Dennis and Jane, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Redmont was awarded the distinction of Chevalier (Knight) of the Legion of Honor by President Pompidou in 1972.
He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II, and earned a Purple Heart for service in Roi-Namur, Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. He has spoken at Canton High School and participated in the “Two Way Street” exchanges, volunteering at Canton elementary schools.
