Last Friday night, local teen pop/R&B group the Varsity Girls brought their unique sound and versatile musical talents to Canton High School for a special benefit concert sponsored by Britta Reissfelder of Coldwell Banker on behalf of the Luce School CAPT.
The Boston-based quartet is considered by many to be on the verge of stardom, and they are already quite accomplished, having recently recorded the theme song for Nickelodeon’s Halo Awards. They also continue to make appearances at many area fundraisers, including last week’s performance in Canton, which was used to raise money for the expansion of the Luce School playground.
The playground fund was established earlier this year following discussions with the Canton School Committee. According to Luce CAPT members, an expanded playground will help to accommodate the growing number of students at the school and will also benefit the entire community. All of the proceeds from the Varsity Girls’ performance, including ticket and merchandise sales, will go toward this project.
The announcer for the evening was Kiss 108’s Dave Casanave, who showed the audience videos of the Varsity Girls, including their latest video of the girls performing “Firework” by Katy Perry. Casanave then introduced Canton High School’s own Eco-Project as the opening act, followed by the Varsity Girls as the headlining act.
The crowd screamed as the Varsity Girls took the stage. The foursome — Simone Cardoso, Jillian Zucco, Kimber-lee Jacobsen and Jillian Jensen — performed popular songs from other artists as well as a few of their own. Throughout the show a large crowd formed down front as many of the kids made their way up to the stage. Grace Nourse, 8, and Grace Hannigan, 7, were both extremely excited because the girls touched them when everyone was up at the stage.
The crowd sang along to many of the songs, including the Varsity Girls’ recent hit single “Be You.” Kathryn Doody, 12, and Molly Dion, 12, claim they are the Varsity Girls’ biggest fans and that the show was amazing.
“They really reached out to the audience and made it fun,” said Dion.
During the concert, the girls announced they had a special guest whom they would sing to. They then walked out with a cardboard cutout of Justin Beiber. Sarah Rawding, 9, said that this was her favorite part of the show. Maddie Nourse, 10, loved the entire show, and when asked her favorite part, she said “all of it.”
The Varsity Girls’ performance attracted a large audience and appeared to raise a substantial amount of money for the playground fund. The group was well received by the audience, and based on the comments made by a number of people at the concert, this is definitely a band to watch out for.
