Jennifer Henderson named CPS curriculum director
By Canton CitizenThe Canton Public Schools and Superintendent Jeffrey Granatino announced Monday that Jennifer Henderson has been named the permanent director of curriculum and instruction. Henderson has been serving as the interim director since her appointment last June by outgoing Superintendent Dr. John D’Auria.
Prior to transitioning to the central office, Henderson served as the principal at the JFK Elementary School for three years. Before her arrival in Canton, she had been an elementary principal and a middle school teacher in the Taunton Public School System. She also spent 10 years as the director of the Morton Hospital and Medical Center-Speech, Hearing and Language Center, where she specialized in primary level language disorders and cognitive rehabilitation of traumatic and closed head injured adolescents. In that position, she traveled extensively throughout the United States, training educational and rehabilitation professionals in the area of cognitive and language development and post-injury rehabilitation.
Henderson will oversee the development and administration of Canton’s PK-12 curriculum and instructional plan and the district-wide professional development initiatives, as well as manage local, state and federal grants. Since taking on her new role in June, she has worked diligently to implement the district’s new K-5 ELA curriculum program entitled Journeys. She works with coordinators at the middle and high schools on matters of curriculum related to their specific disciplines and serves as the point person for all PK-12 directors in the district as well as the technology department. She is also a valued member of the Superintendent’s administrative team and is in the process of directing the search committees for the new Galvin Middle School principal as well as the district’s technology integration administrator.
“Jen Henderson is a tremendously talented educator who has a clear vision for the direction Canton should be heading in with regards to curriculum,” Granatino said. “Jen was able to build a tremendous learning environment at the JFK and she is now able to use her talents in a way that will benefit the entire district.”
Beyond her work on curriculum/instruction and grants, Henderson has also been attempting to provide more community outreach programming in cooperation with various committees such as the Bullying Prevention and Intervention Committee, develop a curriculum newsletter, and coordinate the district’s professional staff development initiatives. She will continue to work with the elementary literacy coaches as well as look for ways to help augment programs such as the New Teacher Orientation.
“Jen is always the first one in the office and one of the last to leave,” Granatino said. “Her work ethic is what makes her so special and her determination, relationship building skills and attention to detail will make her a superb director of curriculum and instruction.”
