CHS girls’ hoop team shut down by Foxboro
By Tony CatinellaThe Canton High girls’ basketball team suffered its second straight loss of the season Friday at the hands of Foxboro 68-46.
After getting blown out by Franklin last week, the Bulldogs had seven days in between games to prepare for Foxboro. Snow had postponed their Tuesday home game against Sharon, and the long layoff caused the girls to be out of sync.
The Bulldogs got beat defensively and could not stop Foxboro’s best scorer, Kayleen Whall, who scored her 800th high school point in the win and finished with a game-high 17 points.
Canton only had two players reach double digits in the loss. Forward Olivia Murphy was Canton’s leading scorer with 16 points while Alana Pitts-Anaya went 4 for 5 from the free-throw line and finished with 10 points. Senior captain Julianna Strahan scored seven points while sophomore guard Lauren Berman finished with six points and fellow sophomore guard Kristen Burns finished with four.
The good news in the loss was the return of senior captain Nikki Fralick, who returned after missing several games with an ankle injury.
This was the second meeting between the two teams this season. On December 21, Canton got a surprise victory against the much more experienced Warriors, outscoring them 21-14 in the fourth quarter en route to a 59-53 win at Canton High School. On Friday, Canton could not stop Whall and also allowed Foxboro guard D.J. Quadrozzi to score a career-high 13 points.
With the loss, the girls matched their longest losing streak of the season. They also lost two straight on January 6 and 11 to Mansfield and North Attleboro.
The Bulldogs (7-6) were scheduled to play a nonleague game at Bedford Monday night, and tomorrow they will host Oliver Ames at CHS at 6:30 p.m.
