Gymnasts end season on a high note

By

The CHS gymnastics team bowed to Attleboro in its final meet of the season, losing by their slimmest margin yet with 113.2 points to Attleboro’s 121.75. The team picked up several individual honors for its gymnasts, though, as it ended the season on a high note.

The 2010-2011 season was all about improvement for the Bulldogs. A new crop of athletes stepped into the gym for the first time while seasoned gymnasts honed their craft. With each meet, confidence grew and the gymnasts explored more complex territory. Starting scores were bumped up, routines became clean, and personal bests were earned.

Siena Terenzio spent her final season scoring points and exemplifying what it means to be a captain. For her efforts, she was named a Hockomock League All Star. Gymnastics coach Carla King had only kind words for the departing gymnast.

“She was an amazing captain and team leader,” King said. “She has been such a pleasure to have for four years.”

Terenzio scored a 7.3 on the vault and a 7.2 on floor exercises against Attleboro.

Jessie Brooks, Liz Mason, Rachel Leibovitz, and Lizzy Doherty also made their marks this season, consistently providing the Bulldogs’ high scores.

In the meet against Attleboro, Brooks posted a 7.7 on the vault, a team-high 7.3 on the beam, and an 8.0 on floor. Mason earned a 7.65 (vault), 7.3 (beam), and a 7.7 (floor). Lebovitz, in her first time ever vaulting, scored a 7.1 and also had a 7.9 on floor. Doherty scored a 7.5 on the vault.

All four gymnasts also competed in the Hockomock Championships, along with Becca Pulcini, Terenzio, Jessica Crimi, Jillian Burke, Katie McLaughlin, and Micaiah Slayton.

At both the Attleboro meet and the Hockomock Championships, Pulcini proved to be the strongest Bulldog and a force to be reckoned with. She earned Canton’s highest scores against Attleboro, with an 8.5 (vault), 7.4 (bars), and an 8.4 (floor). Pulcini was also named a Hockomock League All Star along with Terenzio. Her prowess on the vault was unmatched, and with a season-high score of 9.25, she earned the title of the 2010-2011 Individual Vault Champion for the Hockomock League.

King is happy with her team and all that her gymnasts have accomplished. “The girls had a lot of fun at this meet,” she said. “We were all sad to see the season come to an end.”
