Indoor track teams fall short vs. OA
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys’ indoor track team lost a tough one Saturday, ending its undefeated dual meet season at 2-1-1 with a narrow loss to Oliver Ames 45-41 at the Franklin Field House.
Head coach Chris Elgar said his team gave a maximum effort but fell just short. “They gave them their best,” he said.
Senior Jon Vaughn led the scoring, winning the 50-yard hurdles at 6.4 seconds and the 50-yard dash at 5.6 seconds. Other first-place wins were recorded by Cam Huber in the 600-meter run (1:32.6), Jake Fruci in the 1,000 meters (2:52.2), and Matt Sidney in the high jump (5’8”).
Canton’s 4×400 relay team was also victorious, winning the event at 4:04.9. Relay members included Obi Nwankwo, Tom Kerikas, Huber, and Alex Lenkei.
Other point scorers included Kerikas, 2nd, 50-yard hurdles, 7.1 seconds; Evan Feldman, 2nd, 300, 42.5 seconds, and Nwankwo, 3rd, 42.9 seconds; Mike Bronstein, 3rd, two mile, 11:04.5; and Chris Boughter, 2nd, high jump, 5’8”.
Elgar said many of these performances represented significant personal improvements.
“[Fruci’s] time in the 1,000 was a significant personal best, as well as Julian Malbranch in the shot put and [Feldman] in the 300,” Elgar said. “Obviously, working with coaches Rowe, Pike, and Mattson have contributed to these improvements.”
As for the girls’ team, they, too, lost to Oliver Ames on Saturday (64-29) and is now 1-3 entering the Hockomock League meet this weekend.
According to CHS girls’ head coach Ben Mattson, there were still plenty of bright spots, including Mellyn Costello’s winning performance in the hurdles and her second-place finish in the 50-yard dash. Radiya Buchanan also had a strong meet, finishing second in the high jump and running a good leg in the 4×400 relay.
Kate D’Orazio won the 600 and ran another good leg on the 4×400 relay. Also placing first in an event was Chidimma Nwankwo with a throw of 35 feet, 10.5 inches in the shot put. Emily Cody ended up placing third in the 300.
This weekend, both the girls’ and boys’ teams will travel to the Reggie Lewis Center for the league meet in what Mattson called the girls’ “focal point of the entire season.”
“We have been counting down the days at practice until the big meet,” he said, “and look forward to everyone putting it all out there and throwing out personal bests.”
