Swim teams place 7th in league championship meet
By Jeffrey CattelLast weekend the girls’ and boys’ swimming teams competed in the Hockomock League championship meet with both Canton teams finishing seventh out of 10 teams.
“Two real standouts were Isobel Heck, who has dropped 39 seconds off her 500 [yard freestyle] time this season, and Rachel McHugh, who dropped 50 seconds,” coach Lori Mooney said.
Chris LeDonne remains the team’s lone qualifier for sectionals, which will be held Saturday at MIT. LeDonne qualified in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle.
Mooney noted, however, that numerous swimmers were on the cusp of qualifying for sectionals, including both the girls’ and boys’ 200-free relay teams. At the Hocks, the girls’ team of Alison McHugh, Brianna Duserick, Abbey Willis and Emily Breviglia finished fourth in 1:57.91, while the boys’ team of Scott Buresh, James Frazier, Eric Newton and LeDonne finished fifth in 1:58.87.
Additionally, Frazier and Duserick neared qualifying times in both their 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. McHugh also just missed sectionals with her time in the 50-yard freestyle.
On the boys’ side, strong performances came from both LeDonne and Newton, who finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle. Buresh showcased his endurance, finishing ninth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:14:93. Frazier and John Whittemore performed similarly well in the 100-yard breaststroke.
On the girls’ side, seven swimmers — Duserick, McHugh, Breviglia, Eleni Papdopoulos, Rachel Salive, Amberly Diep and Felicia Lee — finished in the top 50 for the 50-yard freestyle, a race with 132 participants. Other top performers included Willis, Shay Connolly, Christa Corkhum and Olivia Kenyon, who all finished in the top 30 for the 100-yard butterfly.
