Bulldog grapplers trounce Stoughton

By

The Canton High wrestling team ended their regular season schedule on the highest of notes, defeating archrival Stoughton by a score of 54-24. The Bulldogs received contributions from every part of their lineup in the blowout of the Black Knights. The meet, held at Canton High, was the last home meet for the CHS senior grapplers.

CHS wrestling“Top to bottom, this was a great meet for everyone,” said head coach Brian Caffelle. “Our guys understood what the rivalry meant. We took them lightly in the past, but we learned to never underestimate a rival, because a rival will always put forth their best effort.”

“This one meant a lot for the seniors; it was a special moment for their last meet at home,” Caffelle observed.

Captain Kevin Connolly (135 pounds) and fellow seniors Quamine Heraldo (140 pounds), John McCabe (160 pounds), and Anthony LaRose (215 pounds) all got victories in their last meet at home.

LaRose, a standout on the CHS football team, joined the team in January. However, he has proved to be a fast learner and valued contributor in his limited time on the squad.

“We’ve been keeping a close eye on him,” said Caffelle. “We are helping him as much as we can in a limited time, just teaching him a few basic moves. We had a big hole at 215 [pounds], but since he joined the team he’s made a big impact. It’s great to see him get a big win at home on senior night.”

The Bulldogs also got victories from freshmen Chris Sullivan (103 pounds) and Quinn Merrigan (112 pounds), as well as juniors David Rosenberg (125 pounds), Chris Parsons (152 pounds), and Josh Matt (171 pounds).

The Bulldogs will look to carry the momentum from their victory into the sectional meet on February 14.

“We need to work on refining our skills, and also taking risks during matches,” said Caffelle. “A lot of guys wrestle not to lose in sectionals, instead of wrestling to win. In the past we have had a tendency to break under pressure. We just have to get them over that hurdle. We told our guys that we are going to turn a lot of heads. [Assistant coach] Sean Rockwell and I have all the confidence in the world that the kids are going to get it done.”
