Girls’ hockey team settles for a split
By Jeffrey CattelThe Canton High girls’ hockey team finished the second-to-last week of the season with a mixed bag — an impressive 5-1 win over Medway/Ashland and a disappointing 4-3 loss against Franklin. The team’s season record now stands at 11-5-3.
Coach Kelly Rider said the girls played hard and smart in the first period against Medway/Ashland. After the first 15 minutes of game play, Canton was already up 3-0. The Bulldogs scored two more goals in the third period, while Medway/Ashland was able to prevent a shutout by scoring a goal off a power play in the third period. Meaghan McKenna finished the game with a hat trick while Stephanie Rizzitano and Meghan Lennon netted the team’s two other goals.
“It was a great win for us because we played a competitive team, played our game, and the score actually reflected that for us,” Rider said. “It was a great game to increase our confidence as well as see how much we have improved.”
That level of confidence continued in Saturday’s game against Franklin. In the first period, Canton pushed ahead 2-0 with one goal each from Lennon and McKenna. In the second period, both teams netted one goal. Canton’s goal came from Bethany Kelly on a power play.
Despite finishing the second period up 3-1, Rider said the girls were only playing mediocre hockey. In the third period, Canton fell behind when Franklin scored three goals to come from behind and walk away with the win.
“We know what it takes to win, and hopefully this was a last reminder heading into the playoffs of what we need to do to win,” Rider said.
