CHS high jumper Matt Sidney to compete in Nationals
By Mike BergerCHS high jumper Matt Sidney will be competing in the National High School Track Championships this weekend in New York after finishing in a tie for sixth place out of 13 finalists at the New England High School Track Championships on Friday, March 4, in Boston.
According to coach Chris Elgar, Sidney was battling a cold but was able to clear six feet, five inches. In recent championship meets, Sidney equaled his Class C winning jump with a six-foot, six-inch mark at the All-States held a week ago.
CHS senior Jon Vaughn finished a very respectable 13th among 30 competitors in the 55-meter hurdles with a best time of 7.91 seconds. Elgar said Vaughn was in great position to make the finals until the last hurdle.
“He certainly has nothing to be ashamed of,” Elgar said. “Jon is worthy of competing at Nationals but instead will prep for the spring season.”
Vaughn finished third with a time of 7.8 seconds in the All States, and won the Class C sectionals with a best time of 7.79 seconds.
