An estimated $3,000 was raised from a benefit hockey game held recently between the Mass. Firefighters and the Boston Police Team at Metropolis Rink in Canton. Four Canton firefighters participated in the charity game – John Buckley, Brian Marshall, Leo Reardon, and Jason Coleman – with proceeds going to support Journey Forward, a Canton-based nonprofit dedicated to bettering the lives of people with spinal cord injuries through an intense exercise program.
Matt Brown of Norwood helped dropped the ceremonial puck. Brown is a Norwood High School hockey player who suffered a spinal cord injury during a game last year. He is currently receiving therapy at Journey Forward.
Although the Boston Police won convincingly 8-2, Canton Fire Lieutenant Tom Driscoll said the game was a success.
“It was a great turnout for a great cause, and Local 1580 would like to thank all those who attended and donated, as well as the players on both teams for putting on a great game,” Driscoll said. Final donations are now being collected from various firefighters’ unions.
