Man About Canton: Dave Bohane named new CHS football coach

By

DID YOU KNOW…

Dave Bohane, who has led the middle school football program for the past two years, has been named the new varsity football coach at Canton High. MAC thinks Bohane sees an abundance of talent in the GMS program and has high hopes for the future.

Article 37 in the upcoming Annual Town Meeting Warrant seeks town approval to lease the run-down Ponkapoag Golf Course if the state declares it “surplus.”  Proponents of the article point to the town’s successful lease of the Metropolis Skating Rink from the state; however, they don’t mention the millions of tax dollars that will be needed to make the necessary repairs and improvements to the course, which experts say is in very poor condition and in need of many expensive repairs.

Article 34 in the TM Warrant is another attempt to adopt the local option meals excise tax, which was killed by Town Meeting last year. The new tax would add a .75 percent local tax to the state’s 6 percent meals tax. The town’s financial director estimates that such a tax will generate about $250,000 in additional revenue for the town. This year, the Finance Committee is reportedly supporting the article as a revenue generator; however, MAC hears the selectmen are split on it.

Article 35 concerns the town’s acquisition of the Reservoir, assuming the present owner, the Napleton Company, fulfills all conditions to its recently negotiated agreement with the Board of Selectmen.  Article 17 seeks to rezone the Napleton Company’s long-vacant Plymouth Rubber property on Revere Street. MAC feels it is about time that something is done about property, which has become an eyesore, and at the same time obtain some badly needed tax revenue for the town.

Article 19 of the TM warrant is sponsored by Police Chief Ken Berkowitz and seeks to recreate the position of Deputy Police Chief.

Those delicious and popular Girl Scout cookies will soon be on sale; and as always, MAC will be buying some because he has a sweet tooth and because the money goes to a great cause. However, apparently not everyone likes them because a recent news article out of Savannah, Georgia, reported that some “hard-hearted” Savannah city officials have barred Girl Scouts from selling their cookies outside of the historic Savannah home of Juliette Gordon Low who founded the organization almost 100 years ago. A complaint last year ended the long-time practice of selling the charitable cookies there.

The plan for creating the largest solar power facility in New England at the old Pine Street landfill appears to be interesting several other cash-strapped communities in Massachusetts. As reported in the Citizen, the selectmen sought and received bids to create the project because it is estimated that over the next 25 years it could generate approximately $70 million in additional revenue for the town.  Southern Sky Renewable Energy has the selectmen’s approval to install the 24,000, three-foot by five-foot solar panels, which are expected to generate up to 5.6 megawatts of power by 2012.

Canton-based Dunkin’ Donuts has announced it is coming out with a new breakfast sandwich that will be called the “Big n’ Toasty.” It features two fried eggs, four slices of smoked bacon, and a slice of American cheese on Texas toast, and it will be available for a limited time at a suggested retail price of $3.29.

MAC sends congratulations to Dorice Khoury who was appointed by the selectmen to the Canton Youth Commission.

The skyrocketing price of gas has caused most of us to modify our driving practices. People are concerned about gas costing over $4 per gallon, and they find it outrageous.

If you are a maple syrup fan, you should know that two state park rangers have handed out dozens of steel sap buckets and lids to nine orange-vested workers on court-ordered community service, and they have been pointed to the long row of maple trees at the Ponkapoag Golf Course.

Finally, the Canton High School Alumni Association will hold its 3rd Annual Trivia Night on Friday, April 1 at the K of C Hall on Pleasant Street from 7 to 11.  Admission is $12 per person.  DJ Gary Titus will host the festivities. There will be some great raffles, including four Red Sox State Street Pavilion box seats. Join in the fun and see some of your old classmates from Canton High School.

A good thing to remember: It is a better thing to do work with the construction gang and not with the wrecking crew.

That is all for now folks. See you next week.
