Scott Herr Memorial Hockey Game set for April 2

By

The second annual Scott Herr Memorial Hockey Game between the Canton High School varsity team and Canton coaches and parents will take place on April 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the game will benefit the Scott Herr Scholarship Fund. Scott was a freshman at Northeastern University when he passed away as a result of a motor vehicle accident in upstate New York. Scott’s father, Joe Herr, said it has been a difficult year, but the people of Canton have been incredible to his family. He said he will never forget all the support his family has received from the people of Canton. Just recently, the new wellness center at Canton High School was dedicated to Scott and will benefit thousands of students in the future helping with physical fitness.

Scott is remembered not only for his athletic ability, but also for his accomplishments in the classroom. He was an excellent student and a member of the National Honor Society. He was a great young man and is missed by all who knew him.

The game coming up Saturday night is a way for players, parents, and coaches to pay tribute to Scott’s memory while playing the game they love. Canton Coach Brian Shuman said he will always remember Scott’s great attitude and dedication to the high school team. Shuman said he uses Scott as an inspiration when motivating the team.

During this past season, Canton played against Westwood in the finals of the Holiday Classic Tournament, which was dedicated to Scott’s memory. A few weeks prior to the tournament, Canton had scrimmaged Westwood and was soundly defeated.

As the final tournament game remained close, Shuman said he spoke about Scott to his team just before they took the ice for the game’s final period. As a result, the Bulldogs came out and played one of the best periods of the season, defeating Westwood 4-1 to win the tournament. Shuman also said that the team always does five sprints at the end of practice in memory of Scott’s No. 5, which he wore for the Bulldogs.

Noting that he is looking forward to Saturday night’s game, Shuman said the coaches and parents have a very good chance of beating the varsity team this year. He said his team better pay attention or they may find themselves losing to a bunch of old guys. Last year the varsity team won 4-3 over the coaches and parents with a late goal by Kurt Leavitt. Shuman, however, said Leavitt’s “fluke” winning goal hit two players along with two posts before supposedly going in.

Admission to the game is free, but donations will be accepted at the door. Long-sleeve t-shirts will be sold in the lobby of the rink during the game.
