Election 2011: Jill Stevens for School Committee

By

Jill Stevens

A social studies teacher and liaison for the Metco program in Sharon, Jill Stevens was appointed to the School Committee last summer to fill a vacancy following the resignation of Tim Brooks. The mother of two children in the Canton Public Schools said she got involved in Canton politics because she “believes strongly in the power of good public education.”

Stevens said she has spent the past eight months getting up to speed on the policies and practices of the committee. She also served on the search committee that selected Bill Conard as the next principal of the Galvin Middle School.

As Stevens looks toward her first full term on the committee, she said her goal for the next three years is simple: “It is a really tough climate for schools right now because budgets are so tight,” she said. “I hope to help the School Committee make good decisions that are in the best interest of the education of the children of our community — to do the most good we can with the dollars we have.”

Other candidates include Daniel Flood for Assessor, Julie Goodman for the Board of Health, Glen Hannington for the Housing Authority, and Susan Cogliano, George Comeau and Dorothy Shea for library trustees.
