Police, Fire dept. gala will honor brethren killed on 9/11
By Canton CitizenAs a way to honor their fellow police officers and firefighters who were killed in the line of duty on September 11, 2001, the Canton Fire and Police departments will host a gala at the Blue Hill Country Club on May 14. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Canton Area Helpline.
“This is the 10th anniversary of their sacrifice,” Police Lieutenant Helena Findlen said, “and we felt there was no greater way to remember them than to give back to the community we serve in a different way than is typical of each agency.”
Findlen also explained the decision to donate proceeds to the local helpline. “The Canton Area Helpline offers services to neighbors in our community who are having difficulty — primarily economical,” she said. “Their mission is twofold. They are the main food pantry administrators — raising necessary funds to keep the pantry open and stocked. And they help residents, who are financially strained, pay utility and medical bills. They provide additional services, primarily to our mature residents, such as arranging rides to medical appointments.”
Findlen added that the helpline has also been “a great partner to the police and fire departments and a wonderful resource to our citizens.”
She said the idea of having the gala came during a conversation addressing how many new, younger police officers and firefighters in the town there are — “and how it would be great to have a social event where we could interact on a more personal note than the usual professional forum of joint trainings.”
“From there,” she added, “it grew and became this social event to begin the summer season. We are really excited and hope to see many of our residents and business owners come join us for this special occasion.”
