Batter Up: Bulldogs win opener

By

The CHS baseball team started the 2011 season with a convincing 9-6 win over Dedham at Dedham High last week.

Head coach Junior Medina praised the performance of Matt Bernstein, who pitched five innings for the win. Michael Hallett closed the sixth and seventh innings and didn’t give up a hit.

The Canton bats came alive with 11 hits. Eight Bulldog starters produced at least one hit, and second baseman Chris Cammaratta had three.

“It was a team effort,” Medina said. “We scored nine runs with nine different players scoring. The defense worked well, turning two double plays and not allowing any big innings.”

Canton did not fare as well in its second game of the season against Sharon, as the Eagles came away with a 14-4 win.

The Bulldogs had a tough game defensively, using five different pitchers. TJ Duggan started, struggled to find the strike zone and gave up a grand slam in the first inning.

Justin Pellegrine came in with one out in the second inning and the bases loaded. According to Medina, Pellegrine pitched well, but the defense let him down with five errors behind him. Canton had seven hits on the day, producing four runs.

The Bulldogs were due to face Foxboro at CHS on April 11 and then travel to Mansfield on April 13.

They will next host North Attleboro on Tuesday, April 19, and Dedham on Wednesday, April 20, with games starting at 3:30 p.m.
