Boys’ tennis team off to 1-1 start
By Danny JosephOne day after its first match of the season was postponed due to wet and rainy conditions, the Canton High boys’ tennis team made a splash of its own. Despite preseason practices being limited by weather, the Bulldogs defeated Dedham High School 4-1 in their first match of the season on Wednesday, April 6, at Dedham.
Freshman Viboosh Chandrasekar led the team with an impressive, straight-set victory. Chandrasekar prohibited his opponent from winning a single game, taking the match 6-0, 6-0.
“We are looking for a strong year with Viboosh as our number one,” said head coach Leo Nelson. Senior Peter Sidney had a strong season debut as well, contributing with a straight-set victory of his own.
Junior Mitch Keyserman was also among those who notched a win for the Bulldogs, pulling off a captivating comeback in what amounted to be the most exhilarating individual battle of the day.
“Mitch Keyserman came out and had the match of the day,” Nelson said. “He came from way behind to win his match, against a very strong player, in three sets. Mitch is really trying to step up and become one of our stronger varsity players.”
On the doubles side, senior Scott Chamberlain and freshman Sam Riemer came away with the victory in their first-ever match as doubles partners.
“Chamberlain and Riemer had a very strong win against a great doubles team,” Nelson said. “Playing together for the first time, they really needed some time to get their timing and communication down, but once they did they controlled the match.
The Bulldogs didn’t fare quite as well in their second match of the season, falling 5-0 to a powerful Sharon High School squad on Thursday, April 7, at Sharon.
“We saw why Sharon tends to be one of the better teams, with some of the best individual players in the state,” Nelson noted. “However, we took away a great deal from the loss, and we will come back stronger and more confident against our future opponents.”
The Bulldogs will next take to the court today, April 14, in a rematch with Dedham at Canton High.
