CHS softball team optimistic despite 0-2 start
By Jeffrey CattelWith five new faces on a team of 11, and six of the starting nine playing new positions, the Canton High softball team may seem unrecognizable when they walk on the field.
Even with all the new team members, coach Ed Amico said the girls have already established a strong sense of camaraderie and shown great improvement in the first two games of the season, both losses: 9-0 against Dedham and 6-2 against Sharon.
“They may be a little inexperienced, but it was incredible how much better they got between game one and game two,” Amico said. “Even just the fact that they improved from four hits against Dedham to 10 hits against Sharon.”
And the Sharon game was much closer than the score suggested. The girls were evenly matched going into the fifth inning, with Olivia Murphy scoring both runs off two RBIs from Erin Russell.
“It was one of those times when we had one bad inning and gave up five runs,” Amico said. “But beforehand they were playing great, beyond my wildest expectations.”
The girls are led this season by senior captains Colleen Myers and Olivia Kenyon. Amico said both captains have already shown strong leadership capabilities and brought the young team together.
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Amico said the team’s goal is to finish first in the Davenport Division of the Hockomock League and make the postseason.
“That means we need to make sure we’re playing better in June than March,” Amico said. “But we’re already playing a lot better in April than in March. I’m thrilled at the improvement seen in the first weeks of the season and hope it only continues.”
