CHS boys’ track team beats Sharon; girls come up short
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys’ track team defeated the hosting Sharon Eagles 70-61 on Thursday, but the girls’ team fell 79-57 in a fairly close meet.
CHS coach Brian Conroy said the win was truly a team effort, with Canton earning points in every event with the exception of one relay race.
Jon Vaughn led Canton with 12 points and qualified for the Class C Meet in the 200 and 110-meter high hurdles. Tom Kerikas also qualified for the states with a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Junior Ethan Feldman qualified for the states in the 200. Other Canton first-place finishes were recorded by Jake Fruci in the mile, Cam Huber in the 800, Obi Nwankwo in the 400, Chris Boughter in the long jump, and Julian Malbranche in the javelin.
Alex Chery, Derek Seto, James Grella, Chris Haidul, Mike Bronstein and Peter Sheehan also scored points for Canton. Although the girls’ team struggled in some field events, coach Ben Mattson said there were “a few positives that came out of the meet,” as well as “signs of areas we need to work on more.”
The top point scorers for the team were Radiya Buchanan, Chidimma Nwankwo, Vicky Tondre and Mellyn Costello. Buchanan had a great day, qualifying for the Class C meet in three events. She won the 400-meter race and came in second in the high and triple jumps. Nwankwo won the shot put and discus, qualifying for states in both. Tondre qualified for the Class Cs in the 100 and 200 meter. She came in second in both events; she also placed second in the long jump.
