CHS baseball team drops two close games
By Mike BergerThe CHS varsity baseball team dropped two games last week but played well against two Hockomock League opponents. Canton fell to Foxboro 9-7 and to Mansfield 5-2. Entering this week, the team’s record stood at 1-3.
In the Foxboro game, Matt Bernstein, who pitched Canton to its only win a week ago, pitched well again but fell victim to errors. In the second inning, sophomore Drew Blake hit a two-run homerun to straight center field. The game was tied at 7 in the sixth inning, but Foxboro won the game on a two-run homerun.
In the Mansfield loss, CHS head coach Junior Medina said sophomore starting pitcher Jimmy Fitzgerald “pitched his heart out.” Through five innings, he limited Mansfield to only two hits and one run. In the sixth inning, Mansfield capitalized on some Canton errors.
Medina said he was impressed with the play of several Canton sophomores, including Fitzgerald, Justin Rudy, Blake, and Ian Flavin.
Canton has a busy schedule this week with games against North Attleboro on April 19, Dedham on April 20, and Dover-Sherborn on Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m. Next week, the Bulldogs will travel to King Philip on Monday for a 3:30 start, followed by another away game at Oliver Ames on Wednesday, April 27, also at 3:30 p.m.
