Bulldog track teams show improvement despite losses to OA, KP
By Mike BergerBoth CHS outdoor track teams were defeated twice last week as the boys fell to 1-2 while the girls’ team remained winless through the first three meets.
Still, improvement was evident in both teams, and several freshmen broke through for the girls’ team to score their first points of the season.
The boys lost to Oliver Ames last Tuesday 89-47 and fell later in the week to King Philip 73-64. Seniors Jon Vaughn and Chris Boughter continue to lead the team in scoring.
Against OA, Vaughn led the Bulldogs with two first-place finishes and a second. Boughter won the high jump and came in third in the triple jump and 400. Jim Grella finished first in the discus and third in the shot put, and Tom Kerikas placed second in the 400 hurdles and 110 high hurdles.
Thursday’s meet against KP was very close, with the Bulldogs getting points in every event except one relay. Boughter led the team with 14 points, winning the high jump and long jump. Vaughn won the 100 and 110-meter hurdles.
Other victories were recorded by Cam Huber in the 800 and Obi Nwankwo in the 400. Nwankwo also participated in the winning 4×400 relay along with Boughter, Chris Haidul and Alex Lenkei.
Haidul also had personal bests in both the javelin and discus. Kerikas grabbed two second-place finishes in both hurdles events. Sophomore Peter Sheehan continues to improve and earned a pair of third-place finishes in the discus and shot put. Julian Malbranche placed second in both the javelin and shot put.
The girls’ team fell 83-63 to Oliver Ames and 106-30 to King Philip.
Vicky Tondre, Radiya Buchanan, Mellyn Costello, Lauren Berman, Kate D’Orazio, and Chidimma Nwankwo continue to lead the team in scoring.
Despite the loss to OA, many team members set season or career personal records. Tondre was a four-time event winner, winning the 100 and 200-meter dashes as well as the triple and long jumps. D’Orazio won the 400 hurdles and anchored the winning and state qualifying 4×400 meter relay.
The other relay members included Berman, a sophomore newcomer, who also won the mile in 5:30; Buchanan, who also finished second in both the 400 and the high jump; and freshman Avery Devoe.
Costello won the 110 hurdles and came in third in the 200 and long jump. Nwankwo placed third in the discus and second in the shot put, and Zarina Brune placed third in the 800.
In the KP meet, Berman won her second mile event in a row as she improved by nine seconds to 5:21.79. Costello also won the 100-meter hurdles at 16.7 seconds. Rushaine Dalrymple placed third in the 400 hurdles at 1:24.4. Michaela Kelly and Devoe placed second and third, respectively, in the 400, and both broke the 70-second mark along with fellow freshman Kim McNally.
Other point scorers included: Sara Teague, 2nd, 800, 2:30; Molly Phalan, 3rd, 200, 30.1 sec.; Mairead Bagley, 3rd, two mile, 14:22.4; and Buchanan, 2nd, discus, 68’7”.
Freshman Rachel Campagna scored her first varsity points, placing second in the long jump at 13 feet, 11 inches. Stephanie Mui and Brune tied for second in the high jump with a best jump of four feet, six inches.
Both teams will have a week off until the next meet at home against Attleboro on Tuesday, April 26, at 3:45 p.m.
