Deputy chief position not needed

By

Dear Editor:

I would like to comment on the proposed town meeting article to create a deputy chief position within the police department. It is the position of the selectmen and chief of police that the position exists but is unfilled. I would point out that the position was replaced by two lieutenants; subsequently, a third lieutenant was added. We would have, if this article is approved, four people assuming the duties that were done by one person ten years ago.

The added position will, in year two or three, add about $100,000 to the budget and will only increase.

It has been reported that many nearby towns have a deputy chief position. However, there is not one town of comparable size that has three lieutenants and a deputy chief position.

I’m sure this article will pass. Maybe enough citizens will agree that we need to send a message, however small.

Thank you,

Richard Poznysz
