CHS girls’ lax team dominates Sharon
By Jeffrey CattelAfter a week with no games, the Canton High girls’ lacrosse team returned to action last week with a dominating 18-11 performance against Sharon.
Both teams started off slowly, but Canton started to push ahead at the end of the first half.
“It was a matter of both teams feeling each other out,” coach Chris Murtagh said. “But at the end of the first half, we really started moving the ball well and pulled ahead.”
Top goal scorers included Emma Compagna with four, Meaghan McKenna with three and Sarah Healey, Kellie Stigas and Jackie Merrigan with two goals each. Jen Martin, Mary Lennon, Kaitlin Phillips, Meghan Lennon and Danielle McKenzie all netted one goal each.
But the team’s strength didn’t come solely from its strong offensive effort, and Murtagh singled out defensemen Sara Civian and Amanda Crowley as standouts in the game.
The large lead also allowed Murtagh to rest the starters and give more time to less experienced players. Michelle Bigot, the team’s main goalie, stepped out of goal after the first half, giving Lexi Hansen the opportunity to gain more experience in the net.
“We were able to put a lot of girls in new positions on the field because we were playing so well,” Murtagh said. “Having players try out new positions will allow us to continue to play confidently, even if some players experience injuries during the season.”
