Boys’ tennis team hitting its stride

With a newfound swagger and intensity, the Canton High boys’ tennis team is playing its best ball of the year. The Bulldogs routed Franklin 3-1 on Friday at CHS to improve their record to 4-5. The fifth and final point of the match was suspended due to rain, but Canton was able to secure the victory before the inclement weather set in.

First and second singles remained a strong point for the Bulldogs, as freshman Viboosh Chandrasekar and senior Peter Sidney both won in straight sets. CHS also received a welcome boost from its new second doubles tandem of Alex Geyer and Alex Garcia.

“Our new second doubles came through with a strong win,” said head coach Leo Nelson. “It took a bit for them to warm up, but once they did they controlled the net and stayed aggressive against a tough Franklin team.”

Nelson was pleased with more than just the effort of Garcia and Geyer, as the Bulldogs submitted their most convincing team effort of the season.

“Top to bottom, the match against Franklin was the best we have looked all year,” he said.

The victory over Franklin helped to ease the pain of a tough loss at Attleboro earlier in the week. Despite playing some inspired tennis, the Bulldogs fell in a heartbreaker, 3-2. Freshman sensation Chandrasekar again notched a victory, as did the second doubles team of Matt Garcia and Logan Cerruti.

“Our kids came out and played really well, but it was just a tough loss,” said Nelson.

CHS looked to surpass the .500 mark this week with matches against Sharon, Foxboro and Norwood.
