Girls’ track team nabs second win in two weeks
By Mike BergerThe CHS girls’ outdoor track team beat Stoughton 70-66 last week to improve to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Hockomock’s Davenport Division.
Vicky Tondre, Radiya Buchanan and Chidimma Nwankwo combined for seven first-place finishes, and freshman Mellyn Costello also scored several points to help lead the Bulldogs to the win.
Tondre finished first in three events – the 100-meter dash (12.9 sec.), 200 (27.2 sec.) and long jump (16’10.5”). Buchanan won both the high jump (4’8”) and triple jump (34’9.25”), while Nwankwo finished tops in the shot put (33’7”) and discus (93’7”).
First-place finishes were also turned in by Kate D’Orazio in the 400-meter hurdles (70.8 sec.), sophomore Lauren Berman in the mile (5:26.7), and Costello in the 100-meter hurdles (16.6 sec.).
The 4×100 relay team clinched the meet with a win behind senior Molly Phalan and three freshmen: Lexie MacQuarrie, Sarojini Schutt and Rachel Campagna.
Second-place points were earned by Zarina Brune, 800, 2:23.58; Costello, long jump, 15’1.75”; and Tondre, triple jump, 33’4.5”.
Third-place points were earned by Costello, 100-meter dash, 13.8 sec.; Sarah Teague, 800, 2:37.5; Anna Amico, javelin, 72’11”; Avery Devoe, high jump, 4’6”; and freshman Michaela Kelly with a personal-best time (65.7 seconds) in the 400.
Head coach Ben Mattson said Haley Gaughan picked up a big point in the two mile, being thrown in at the last minute and placing third.
Last week’s state freshman and sophomore meet was canceled halfway through the event because of rain. Rachel Campagna placed in the top five in the triple jump. Devoe had a personal best and placed tenth in the high jump; Costello came in second in hurdles, and Kelly had another personal-best time in the 400.
The girls’ team will aim for a .500 record with a dual meet May 10 at Foxboro.
