CHS baseball team earns exciting win over Foxboro
By Mike BergerWith several stolen bases and great pitching by Tom Nickel and Jimmy Fitzgerald, the CHS baseball team improved to 4-10 with an exciting, come-from-behind win over Foxboro last week.
Entering the final inning down 2-0, hits by Drew Blake, Matt Potts and Matt Bernstein — along with key at bats by Matt Nichols and Justin Pelligrini — led the way for the Bulldogs’ win.
In the seventh inning, Blake led off with a single. A hit and run single by Potts sent him to third base, and a sacrifice fly by Nichols scored Blake to make the score 2-1. Potts stole second and the game was tied when Bernstein hit an RBI single.
Bernstein then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Pelligrini came up big for Canton by putting the ball in play for Bernstein to score, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
CHS coach Junior Medina said Nickel pitched great for five innings, letting up two runs in the fifth inning. Fitzgerald shut the door on the Foxboro hitters in the sixth and seventh as he recorded his second win of the season.
Earlier in the week, Bernstein was untouchable through five innings against Sharon, letting up two hits and striking out six. Canton had a 2-0 lead until late in the game when the Eagles, bolstered by two Bulldog errors in the sixth, exploded for eight runs and the win.
With the season winding down, the team has improved its batting average to .260, with Andrew Vinciguerra and Chris Cammarata leading the team with a .367 average. Potts is close behind at .350 and Blake is at .333 with one home run. Pitching wise, Fitzgerald has two wins and two losses and Bernstein and Hallett each have one win.
Weather permitting, Canton was due to play Dover Sherborn at home on Tuesday and travel to Oliver Ames the next day.
