Boss, Mary E.
By Canton CitizenMary Elizabeth Boss (known as Betty), 89, formerly Mary Elizabeth Govatsos, a longtime resident of Canton, passed away on February 7, 2011. She was born on June 28, 1921, and in 1955 she moved to Canton with her husband, Edward A. Govatsos, design engineer and owner of Boston Packaging Machinery Co. of Canton. They remained happily married in Canton until Edward passed away in 1994.
Community service was important to Betty. She participated in many local organizations and was deeply involved with the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church. Over the years, her contribution to the church included various roles, including serving as president.
Betty valued education and she was integral in the early years of the Scholar Dollar Foundation. After obtaining a graduate degree from Boston College, she served as a loving and dedicated special education teacher at Brockton High School and as a school administrator. She loved to travel and visit historical landmarks at home and abroad. While traveling across the country in 1996, she met Marvin L. Boss at the Salmon Ruins in New Mexico. The couple moved to Ukiah, CA, together where Betty remained committed to her community, family and friends. They were happily married for 14 years until Betty passed away in their Ukiah home.
Betty leaves behind her husband, Marvin L. Boss, three sons and a daughter: Philip Govatsos of Boston, Charles and Robert Govatsos of Los Angeles, and Mimine Ambrois of Ukiah, CA. She also leaves behind four grandchildren: Michelle and Corey Ambrois of Ukiah, and Ariel and Juliana Govatsos of Los Angeles. Those who knew Betty Govatsos will always remember her passion for life, her knowledge, her commitment to community service, and how she made everyone around her feel welcomed.
