A Spring to Remember
By Canton CitizenCanton High School appears to be in the midst of a spring sports renaissance, with all eight teams getting at least a taste of the postseason this year. Below is a snapshot of each team’s accomplishments to date:
Boys’ lacrosse: The Bulldogs finished second in the Davenport Division and a program-best 11-6 overall, led by junior captain Matt Malloy, who finished third in the Hockomock League in total points. Seeded 15th in the Division 3 south sectional tournament, the team will square off against 18th seeded Lynnfield in the opening round on Tuesday.
Girls’ lacrosse: The girls ended up just shy of .500 at 7-9 overall, but they went 5-1 in their division to capture the inaugural Davenport Division title. Their season ended Saturday with a 21-11 loss to Medway in the opening round of the south sectional tournament.
Boys’ tennis: Led by freshman sensation Viboosh Chandravekar, the Bulldogs went on a late-season tear to finish 10-7 overall. They now move on to the Division 2 south sectionals (opponent and match date/time TBA).
Girls’ tennis: Also tournament bound, the girls’ team went 10-6 behind the dominant play of the Nannery sisters: freshman Erika at first singles and junior Michaela at second singles. Erika recently excelled at the girls’ individual tournament, making it all the way to the semifinal round.
Baseball: Despite a 6-12 overall mark, the Bulldogs went 3-2 down the stretch and clawed their way into the Division 3 tournament with a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Dover-Sherborn. The team had another comeback on Thursday, topping King Philip 5-4 in the regular season finale.
Softball: They struggled mightily throughout the first half of the season, but the young squad has looked like a different team as of late and are now headed to the postseason after an impressive 8-0 win over Boston Latin Academy in Friday’s season finale.
Boys’ track: The team as a whole struggled at times this season, but several individual members had outstanding seasons, including senior Jon Vaughn, who heads to All-States after his gold medal performance in the 100-meter dash at the Division 3 EMass championships. Other standouts included Matt Sidney (high jump), Tom Kerikas (400m hurdles) and the 4×400 relay team of Obi Nwankwo, Vaughn, Chris Boughter and Cam Huber.
Girls’ track: The girls’ team also had an up and down season, but they found another gear at the Hockomock championships, finishing third overall while boasting three individual champions: Vicky Tondre (200m), Chidimma Nwankwo (shot put) and Lauren Berman (mile). All three girls went on to shine at the Division 3 meet, with Berman winning the gold medal in the mile, Nwankwo finishing second in the shot put and fourth in the discus, and Tondre finishing seventh in the 200 and sixth in the long jump. Radiya Buchanan added two top-ten finishes (high jump and triple jump) and the 4×100 relay team finished seventh overall.
