Girls’ lacrosse team bows out of postseason

By

Missing two starters to illness and one to a concussion, the Canton High girls’ lacrosse team gave it their all against 12th seeded Medway, but fell short in the first round of the state tournament with a 21-11 loss.

“We brought up some JV players and gave them an opportunity to play in the tournament,” head coach Chris Murtagh said. “And they ended up coming up big for us.”

Freshman Sam Sullivan scored two goals, while fellow freshman Kellie Stigas netted one. Other scorers included Meghan Lennon with four goals and Kate Merrigan and Sarah Healey with two apiece.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the first half, but as the game progressed, Medway managed to chip away at Canton’s lead. Murtagh said the girls struggled with the transition game, specifically on the draw – something that has plagued the team all season. And as the Mustangs continued to rack up goals, the Bulldogs started to play reactively.

“We tried to play an aggressive defense,” Murtagh said. “But Medway was able to capitalize on this and pull our players out of position, making quick holes to the goal.”

After the game, Murtagh said the mood among the girls was bittersweet.

“We did meet the goals we set out at the beginning of the season,” he said. “But we would have certainly liked to have made it further in the tournament.”
