Surging softball team advances to postseason
By Jeffrey CattelAfter a rough 1-11 start to the season, the Canton High softball team has advanced to the postseason with four wins in the last six games.
“I couldn’t be more proud of what these girls have accomplished,” coach Ed Amico said. “They have been playing their best softball of the year, having some fun and working hard. Their hard work and patience paid off as they now await the start of the second season.”
The Bulldogs started out the week losing a 9-0 shutout to Oliver Ames. But the team managed to bounce back with two big wins, first 3-1 against Attleboro and then 8-0 over Boston Latin Academy to clinch a spot in the tournament.
Both teams remained scoreless in the game against Attleboro going into the fourth. The Bombardiers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but Canton responded in the bottom of the same inning as Julia Murphy scored off a double by Olivia Kenyon. The two teams remained tied going into the sixth when the Bulldogs pulled ahead with two runs: one from Murphy off a single by Kenyon and another from Kenyon off a single by Sam Sullivan.
Later in the week, the girls showcased their dramatic improvement from the beginning of the season with a dominating victory over Boston Latin Academy. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after just three innings and then cruised to an 8-0 win. The team racked up 10 hits, including a towering home run from Kenyon. Defensive highlights in the errorless game by Canton included 11 strikeouts by star pitcher Kenyon and a dramatic diving catch by catcher Colleen Myers.
